What documents?

We accept documents of all types and sizes, from the shortest newspaper advertisement, right through to theses and technical documents. Essays, letters, short stories, novels, catalogues, magazine articles, web pages, business proposals, tourist brochures, instruction manuals, you name it.

How do we correct?

Typically we use the 'Track Changes' feature in your word processing software. This will allow you the opportunity to review our comments, and to accept or reject the changes we've made. We can edit websites directly, and can still correct hardcopy using traditional proof marks.

What do we correct?

When we proofread and edit we will check and correct spelling, grammar and sentence construction. There is a fine line between pedantry and common sense in using the English language. We are aware of the ever-changing use of language, particularly in the electronic medium, and we are flexible in approach depending on the type of document being reviewed. We also of course take into account your 'house style'. Good grammar is designed to avoid ambiguity, and present the material in the clearest possible way.

How much? How long?

How much: When you send us a document we will promptly provide you a no obligation quote. Our rates are based on a word count, and as a guide proofreading costs £1 per 100 words. How long: We aim to return your corrected text as quickly as possible. For short documents this typically means one or two working days. Obviously we will require longer for anything more substantial. The very nature of the work means that it should not be hurried, so please let us know your deadline when you send your text, and we will do our best to accommodate you. When we send you a quote we will also tell you the expected completion time.

Proofreading or copy-editing?

Proofreading is a final review of your work to eliminate errors. We will correct spelling, language usage, and grammar. Where the meaning of any part of the document is unclear the section will be marked.

Copy-editing combines proofreading with revision to enhance the clarity and flow of the document. We will seek to improve the professionalism of the English, replacing inappropriate words or phrases with more appropriate ones, as required.

In traditional publishing the two roles are separate, but for digital publishing, including web design, it may be that you require a combination of the two services, and we will be happy to discuss this with you.

Websites

We could of course just copy your website text into a document and send the corrected version to you. However many of our clients prefer that we edit directly on their website, which we are happy to do.

We are familiar with all major Content Management Systems (WordPress, Joomla, Drupal and more) and ecommerce packages (Magento, Shopify, WooCommerce, Volusion, Bigcommerce etc.), plus bespoke systems and not forgetting good old HTML.
